Jin (Shizen no Teki-P) – ZIGI – TOB English Cover

Looking up what the title of this Jin song can mean, it appears that “mere child’s play” may be the most fitting, considering the song’s themes. But that doesn’t look and sound as cool as “ZIGI,” so yeah, I left it as is. Anyway, distinguishing this Allegories track further from the rest of Jin’s discography, especially considering “Yobanashi Deceive” and “Imaginary Reload” being similar to it, I’d say that, well, it’s the creepy one among Jin’s dark groovy tracks I’ve known so far. I think I’ll even call it my favorite among them thanks to how it depicts adulthood as childishness rather than just adulthood as the enemy of childhood. The video description hype line certainly helps, too, as it goes like “A child who deceives another child is called an ‘adult,'” which I certainly agree with, especially as a manchild. Still, I also tried to make the original’s English segments more understandable in my translyrics. You know they had to be fixed.

As for other fun things I had with the production of this cover, it also included my first vocal recording at my grandparents’ place. It went better than I thought, and/or Shigeru worked on my recordings better than I thought. However it went, the finished audio got me figuring out my sound better, and so I have big thanks to give. For one, funk might be more of an essential in my sound than I thought, you know? And yes, this cover also brings me back to my two attempts at covering “Yobanashi Deceive.” And I’m happy to have outdone the me that did those, alright.

Also, yes, I did include upside-down subtitles to match the original video’s. You like it?

Well, here’s the mp3 and the lyrics sheet of this cover if you liked it that much. Do remember to credit and link me if you’re using them, especially with honest constructive feedback to me.

Jin (Shizen no Teki-P) – MERMAID – TOB English Cover

Even while working on the subtitles for this cover, this song and its MV got me wanting to cry, and this is one of two Allegories tracks that I consider tearjerkers, the other being “FREAKS.” Like, dying’s already and always a pain (If it’s not you being in pain thanks to your dying, it’s someone who loves you who’s in pain there), but losing a loved one is arguably worse, and knowing that you’re in a situation where you’ll soon die after them doesn’t really help alleviate the pain that much. And making this song hit harder to me is how it’s about a couple, and I’m quite the sucker for romances. And now I’m further enjoying how Jin had his own vocals take center stage in the mini album, especially with how the songs and their themes better resonate with a mature human voice. I guess I can say that his discography ages and ages well with him every release, then!

As for the translyrics, yes, I also changed up the onomatopoeias. The original Japanese has “fuwa fuwa” and “hara hara,” while I bring you “ticking and tocking.” And basically, I think these translyrics feel lengthier and more sophisticated than the original Japanese, emphasizing the feeling of hammering the adultness of the persona onto your heads, while Jin is softer and more elegant about it with the help of what seems like simpler and more child-like writing to me, something I think is made easier to do by the Japanese language and its packing of a lot of meaning into a few syllables.

As for the audio engineering, which was done by Shigeru again, well, seems like we have another case where there’s a need to cut the bass on my main vocal. I guess I gotta keep that in mind for more delicate productions. Anyway, the lower range of my vocals here are more on the single harmony track here, something I’m glad to have worked up after listening closely to the original and knowing that I can handle something like this quite confidently now. Again, I love my higher range and how it’s improving, but lately, I’ve also been growing appreciation for my lower range and how it’s improving.

And I guess that’s it for this one. Here’s a link to this cover’s mp3, and here’s a link to this cover’s lyrics sheet. Please credit and link me if you’re using my stuff, okay? And I’d love it if you give me honest constructive feedback!

Jin (Shizen no Teki-P) – Erase – TOB English Cover

My appreciation for Jin’s Allegories mini album continues and grows, indeed. And this particular song, which also has a synthed vocal version utilizing KAFU, from said mini album has themes that are not so new to his discography, considering songs like “Toumei Answer” and “Lost Time Memory,” but I don’t think he’s ever gone this direct about it before. Still, I think he plays around with the dramatics as music wonderfully, connecting with lyrics depicting the familiar experience of trying to glorify self-loathing by imagining it as a story to be told, especially a cheap one posing as something holy for us fellow fools to vainly enjoy, something that Jin’s deceptively light instrumental work with Shota Horie, a.k.a. kemu, emphasizes as well.

As for stuff about the translyrics here, something I’d like to note in particular is my decision to have the final pre-chorus split the plural first-person in the original into singular first-person and singular second-person. I guess we can also call it my lazy butt’s copium thanks to how I think I started thinking about whether it’s an error or not after getting the fully engineered audio, but anyway, I feel like the outright plural would’ve made something unnatural both in the singing and in the storytelling in English.

As for the vocals, I could only have my lower range as the harmony here. Jin’s beautiful songwriting continues to push human vocals to their limits, and too much squeak would’ve invaded your ears if I tried to add a high harmony, so yeah. And I’d like to thank Shigeru very much again for yet another beautiful piece of work on the products of my wrung neck.

And now, this cover’s mp3 and this cover’s lyrics sheet. Please do credit and link me if you wanna use my stuff, okay? And please give me feedback, especially the honest constructive sort.

Jin (Shizen no Teki-P) – After Story – TOB English Cover

My previous song cover was also a Jin song, it’s been two weeks since this song was released, and I impulsively made a straight-up English cover of it. Feel free to wield a higher level of heat if you’re gonna roast my translation skills, also~ And yeah, I uploaded this a day later than planned ’cause I’ve been such a slow guy about my day job stuff.

Anyway, it seems like it’s almost a decade since I started tuning into Jin and his work. KagePro has been pretty much the main reason for my interest in him, and while I can’t say a lot about his non-KagePro work, which I hadn’t been bothering to check out and analyze as much as I do KagePro (and I still haven’t fully read the light novels and the manga), this song makes me feel like he’s really going somewhere in terms of the creative quality of his non-KagePro work. Maybe it’s because of the KagePro sound influence, e.g. the “Remind Blue”-reminiscent melodies at the earlier parts of “After Story, as well, which, as Mekakucity Reload has shown, has evolved even further. And maybe it’s because of how wisely youthful it sounds, too, making me think that he is taking pages from his KagePro work really well, which I think he should keep up. On the other hand, I guess I can hope for a lot more throat-friendlier songs now if he’s going to make and release more original songs with him on main vocals, hahaha! XD

Still, I guess it ain’t gonna be a Jin song if it ain’t requiring a lot of power in terms of vocals. I mean, for example, I can do the final sustain/shout of this song, but I have a particularly hard time yelling the “Let the end of this notice all this now” part as well as Jin does, and I only have so much time to record, so I settled for a falsetto instead. And then there’s Shigeru making my vocals sound so freaking clear and youthful, freaking nuts! I think I’m at a loss for words about that now, hahaha! Thanks very much again, man!

With all that said, here’s the mp3, and here’s the lyrics sheet. Please credit and link me if you’re gonna use my stuff, yo~

Also, honest constructive feedback, please~

Tobby tried to sing “Yuukei Yesterday”

So, Jin’s “After Story” is freaking awesome, and you should check it out. Also, Jin himself is singing there.

Now, as for the Jin stuff that’s the main star of this post, I picked “Yuukei Yesterday” thanks to my own experiences with what I think might be my own brand of tsundere that I’m not gonna explain further so explicitly right now. That, and for a KagePro song, it’s pretty easy to sing. And then there’s how my more popped-up taste in music got me grooving to this more lately. Yeah, I think I realized how much this song really screams tsundere in a deep and profound way, especially with how it paints a picture of how hard it is for us foolish humans to identify and, by extension, wield true love. I mean, seriously, us imperfect nuts are supposed to love our fellow imperfect nuts? Yeah, that’s a question we foolish humans often struggle to properly ask and answer.

As for the more technical stuff in the making of this, I very much enjoyed putting character into my singing here, and I felt like I really have improved in singing with character. RERO definitely helped enhance how that sounds on the record, too, also helping me make my first KagePro vocal cover with actually decent audio quality, something I never bothered to have in the years before, hahaha…Anyway, again, thanks very much for your help, RERO!

Now, here’s the mp3 for this vocal cover, yo~

And hey, I’d like some honest constructive feedback!

Souzou Forest – TOB Tagalog Cover

Saka August 15, so ‘yon. XD

Ah, at this time, among other things, may mga harmonies ‘tong take na ‘to, ‘di tulad ng nakaraang attempt ko.

Ngayon, heto ang mp3, at heto ang lyrics sheet. Pa-credit at link din po kung gusto n’yo din pong gamitin ang lyrics ko para sa mga sariling cover n’yo po.

And of course, honest constructive feedback. Penge po ng honest constructive feedback.

Tobby tried to sing “Lost Time Memory”

Considering how my throat’s been acting up a lot after this one’s recording process, I feel like Persona 4‘s Teddie in that funny flattened form right now. Pat also pointed out how the messed-up instrumental sound quality gets in the way of my more or less good vocals, and I agree with her. But freaking nuts, I still managed to make a remotely listenable recorded performance with this song, something way better than the last time I tried!

Indeed, I’ve been loving this song more than I first expected. After all those college years, I found this truckload of feels a lot more fun to watch and listen to. Seriously, Shintaro’s growth never sunk into me that much until now. Praise and thanks be to God Almighty very much again!

Now, here’s the mp3. And again, honest constructive feedback is highly encouraged and will be highly appreciated!

Tobby’s Recommendation Yell: Mekakucity Days, Records, and Reload

edited by Pat/Burrito of Feels

The defining work of Jin, a.k.a. Shizen no Teki-P, is a big multimedia mess with beautiful Vocaloid music at its very core. Its light novels and manga are a stack of supplementary flashbacks pretending to be stories, while its anime is also a big and non-sexual piece of fanservice exclusive for the established follower, but the Vocaloid music is where the actual stories are, even making all those adaptations and supplements bearable for the imagination.

Tobby tried to sing “Additional Memory”

The end of the current semester is nearing, and surprisingly, I managed to make this along the way. At the same time, it’s also surprising to have free time, so much that I end up feeling confused about what to do next when I do realize that I have free time. I guess that’s some sort of inertia, then? Well, at the very least, it’s another reason for me to thank God Almighty very much again, yo~

Now, I am also surprised that not only I have sung this KagePro song with an MV before another one with a music video makes it more outdated, I can also sing this song in the original key, way unlike most of the previous KagePro songs I’ve tried to sing so far. I thought I couldn’t at first, but that was actually because of a sore throat I had when the song and its MV first came out, so yeah.

Also, I think I’m managing to be more aware of how I mix audio. I’d like to thank Pat yet again very much as well because of that, otherwise y’all nuts would probably find yourself drowning deeper into my voice, so much that you’d forget that there was an instrumental in the first place. Gotta give a chance to that freaking awesome instrumental too, yo~

Oh, and working those harmonies and ornamentations sure has been going more fun for me lately. Pop songs be helping me appreciate all that more, too~

Anyway, here’s the mp3 for this song cover.

Now, I gotta go chill in further preparation for the big final weeks of this uni semester…and hey, gimme some honest constructive feedback, yo! \(*A* )

Ah, and by the way, Mekakucity Reload is freaking awesome~

Tobby tried to sing “Headphone Actor”

So, after waiting for a number of days and going trial-and-error with deleting some browsing data, I’ve finally stopped delaying the upload of this song cover which was supposed to be uploaded on my birthday! Plus, I can’t go back in time, so yeah, I’ll deal with what I can deal with.

Anyway, about how I worked on this, well, I think I spent a day or two with recording and mixing vocals for this. I had already prepared the instrumental some time before, lowering the pitch and mastering the sound, the latter being something that I was doing along with a bunch of other offvocal tracks. As for singing the song, there was difficulty, even with the lowered pitch, particularly during the last hook, as I needed to make sure that I didn’t run out of breath while trying to stay on-key. Working on the harmonies also made me think about what can I manage and how I can improve there, especially considering how I hit the ceiling of my range while reaching the end of the high-range harmony track.

Also, I’ve been reminiscing about how “Headphone Actor” was one of the songs which really hooked me into Vocaloid. I think it was during 2012, back when I was just looking at example songs for various Vocaloids while sating my curiosity about the software that I found being referenced by anime and manga fans. IA was one of the Vocaloids I was checking, with Lia’s involvement attracting more of my interest towards IA, and “Headphone Actor,” an IA demo song, was one of the songs I checked out early on. Back then, I wasn’t quite attentive when it came to which musician produced which Vocaloid song and all that, but still, what made “Headphone Actor” so attractive to me was the combination of story and song. Eventually, while I searched for more Vocaloid songs, I found out about Jin, a.k.a. Shizen no Teki-P, and I became a fan of his works, especially the Kagerou Project. The interesting story + song combinations really got me, you know, and although I listen to other musicians more lately, Jin’s works still have a special place in my heart. Also, there’s a ton of other producers and works that kept me a fan of Vocaloid. I guess I can say that them song cover peeps helped out a lot there, too.

Well, that’s that for now, I guess. I’m not up for rambling around too much, see. Also, I managed to get through a semester of classes again, I’m on break from school right now, and I’m gonna go back to it on January. I should take the opportunity to spend more time on sleep and other important things right now, alright…that, and stories, collabs, and more…but first, more sleep…

Also, mp3, yo. And see you again in the den as well. And before I further forget, honest constructive feedback is highly encouraged and will be highly appreciated.
